Here we’ll have a front-row seat to the Great Migration — one of nature’s most spectacular events.

We’ll cross into Tanzania and traverse the sweeping plains of the Serengeti, where lions lounge in the grass and wildebeest stretch to the horizon. We’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife, and wrap up our safari in Tarangire National Park, known for its towering baobabs and large elephant herds.

Whether you choose to dedicate your time entirely to safari or add on a few days of barefoot chill time on Zanzibar’s sun-kissed shores, this East African tour promises inspiring landscapes, game drives, and memories to last a lifetime. This is the best of Africa — wild and wonderful. Let’s go!

Overview

This journey is timed so we can see the Great Migration! It’s one of wildlife’s biggest spectacles on the planet, unfolding each year across the sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle follow the rains in a continuous cycle in search of fresh grazing, navigating vast distances and facing dramatic river crossings where crocodiles and predators wait. This natural phenomenon is not just a migration—it’s survival, instinct, and the raw drama of the wild. Whether we witness thundering herds on the move, calving season in the Serengeti, or a nail-biting Mara River crossing, the Great Migration offers a front-row seat to the untamed heart of Africa.

East Africa can be an expensive destination, but with smart planning, i’ve tried to strike the right balance between value and unforgettable experiences. I’ve avoided overspending on areas that won’t significantly impact your trip—like luxury hotel rooms for a quick overnight stop in Nairobi—so we room in our budget for the moments that truly count. Whether it’s a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti at sunrise or a private game drive during peak migration, some experiences are worth the splurge when they’re once-in-a-lifetime. I will note opportunities for optional upgrades though!

Itinerary

  • Welcome to Kenya! The gateway to Kenya is its capital city, Nairobi. We’ll gather in this vibrant city where views of the continent’s largest mountains, Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, are visible on a clear day.

We’ll meet in the evening for a welcome dinner to get to know one another and to go over the welcome package.

If you arrive early I suggest exploring the city or visiting Nairobi National Park. The park can be reached by bus or car, and visitors are able to observe a multitude of wildlife going about their day against the stark backdrop of the city. A visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, located in the park, is a must. Visitors can observe orphaned elephants and rhinos being led by their carers for a daily mud bath.

  • The Maasai Mara National Reserve is easily Kenya’s most iconic and celebrated wildlife area. Spanning vast plains that stretch into Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, the reserve is renowned for its strong conservation efforts and thriving populations of lion, cheetah, and leopard. It also plays a starring role in the Great Wildebeest Migration, making it one of the best places in Africa to witness nature at its most dramatic. During our time in the Mara, we’ll enjoy game drives through this wildlife-rich landscape, with the exciting option to sign up for a sunrise hot air balloon ride—offering a breathtaking aerial view of the migration and the sweeping savannah below.

  • Today we leave Maasai Mara National Park for Lake Nakuru, part of the Rift Valley’s famous soda lakes, Lake Nakuru is often tinged pink from the thousands of flamingos that gather along its shores to forage in the alkaline waters. Black and white rhinos are a common sight, lumbering near the water’s edge, while stealthy pythons occasionally cross the road as they move between the lakeside and surrounding woodlands. We’ll enjoy a game drive which offers the best chance to spot everything from buffalo and zebra to jackals and hippos. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for big cats—lions, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard—who are known to patrol the shoreline in search of prey. Graceful giraffes can often be seen awkwardly bending for a drink, adding charm to the already rich wildlife scene. Lake Nakuru is one of the best places in Africa to witness flamingos in staggering numbers and to catch a glimpse of the park’s increasingly visible leopards.

  • Amboseli National Park spans 40,000 hectares of striking contrasts—endless stretches of arid earth interrupted by lush swamps brimming with life. Towering in the distance, the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro rise from the Tanzanian plains, providing a breathtaking backdrop to the park’s open landscapes. During the dry season, the sparse vegetation allows for clear and rewarding wildlife sightings. While the park is home to an impressive variety of large game and over 300 bird species, it is best known for its close encounters with free-roaming elephants, some of the most studied in the wild. We’ll explore the park’s winding tracks from the comfort of our lodge and we’ll also visit local Maasai communities to learn about the culture of these semi-nomadic custodians of the land. As Kenya’s second most-visited park after the Maasai Mara, Amboseli is especially celebrated for its iconic views of Kilimanjaro and its extraordinary elephant population.

  • Today we’ll leave the scenic mountain town of Zakopane for the vibrant city of Wrocław. As we travel north, enjoy the changing landscapes—from the Tatra foothills to the rolling countryside of Lower Silesia. Ksiaz Castle, perched dramatically on a forested cliff, is one of Poland’s largest and most intriguing castles. Known for its blend of architectural styles and mysterious WWII-era tunnels, the castle also offers stunning views over the Pełcznica River valley. After our visit, we’ll continue on to Wrocław, where the day concludes amid the city's lively atmosphere and colorful market square.

  • The day begins in Wrocław, a city known for its vibrant Market Square, whimsical dwarf statues, and scenic riverside paths. We'll explore its highlights on a guided morning tour using stable three-wheel electric seated scooters—an easy and fun way to take in the city's rich architecture and atmosphere. After the tour, we’ll head to Poznań, one of Poland’s oldest and most culturally rich cities. We’ll stop at a local farmers market to discover regional flavors, including the city’s beloved St. Martin’s croissants, a sweet pastry filled with white poppy seeds and nuts. The afternoon is yours to explore Poznań’s historic Old Town, colorful facades, and renaissance-style Town Hall at a relaxed pace.

  • After breakfast we’ll set out for the city of Toruń, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its remarkably preserved medieval architecture and as the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus. We'll spend the late morning and early afternoon exploring its cobbled streets, Gothic churches, and charming market square before enjoying a traditional Polish lunch in the heart of the Old Town. Famous for its gingerbread, we’ll be sure to make a stop to pick some up. In the afternoon, we’ll continue to Gdańsk, a historic port city on the Baltic coast known for its maritime heritage, amber craftsmanship, and the beautifully reconstructed Old Town. The day concludes with an evening boat tour along the Motława River, offering scenic views of the city’s waterfront and iconic crane, followed by dinner featuring local specialties and a wide selection of local Vodka for tasting.

  • Experience the serene beauty of Poland’s Lake District with a scenic drive from the coast into the heart of Masuria, where rolling hills, dense forests, and over 2,000 crystal-clear lakes await. As autumn paints the landscape in rich hues of gold, amber, and crimson, we’ll settle into a charming countryside ranch, surrounded by nature. The peaceful atmosphere of the region is especially magical in fall, when mist rises from the water in the early mornings and the crisp air carries the scent of pine. We’ll unwind by the lakes, and for horse fans, you can opt for a guided horseback riding session.

  • We’ll begin the day exploring the charming town of Olsztyn, known for its medieval Old Town, cobblestone streets, and the Gothic-style Olsztyn Castle, once home to astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. We’ll browse local markets, enjoy a coffee in a cozy café, and take in the town’s rich blend of history and culture. By midday, we’ll return to the ranch for a leisurely afternoon. Unwind in the lakeview sauna, paddle across the calm waters by kayak, curl up by the fire with a good book, or take a long walk through the colorful autumn landscape.

  • Our journey continues to Warsaw, where we’ll visit the magnificent Wilanów Palace, often called the “Polish Versailles.” This baroque royal residence, once home to King Jan III Sobieski, is a stunning example of 17th-century architecture surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. In the evening, the palace grounds come alive with the annual Royal Garden of Light—a beloved seasonal tradition. Thousands of decorative lights and illuminated sculptures transform the gardens into a magical wonderland, perfectly timed for our visit.

  • Today offers two unforgettable ways to experience the rich history and culture of Poland—choose the path that speaks to you.

    Option One:
Hop into a vintage Fiat and see Warsaw through the eyes of a local. A professional guide will take you on a lively city tour filled with stories, hidden gems, and a look into Warsaw’s layered past and modern revival. In the afternoon, wander the cobbled streets of the beautifully restored Old Town before rolling up your sleeves for a hands-on pierogi-making class. You’ll end the day with a shared meal of the traditional dumplings you’ve crafted.

Option Two (at an additional cost):
Take a deeper dive into Poland’s complex history with a private guide for a full-day excursion. You’ll visit Majdanek, one of the best-preserved former Nazi concentration camps, followed by a visit to Lublin’s atmospheric Old Town, rich with Renaissance and baroque architecture. After returning to your hotel in the evening, enjoy dinner at your leisure in one of the city’s many inviting restaurants. I’d be happy to recommend a few options!

  • Today we return to Kraków, arriving in time to spend the afternoon exploring the legendary Wawel Castle. Perched above the Vistula River, this historic royal residence is a symbol of Polish heritage and pride, with architectural influences ranging from Gothic to Renaissance. You'll have time to wander its grand courtyards, art-filled chambers, and perhaps even visit the cathedral.

While dinner isn't included this evening, I've chosen a cozy local restaurant known for its hearty Polish cuisine and live music. I’d love for you to join me!

We’ll be staying in Kazimierz, Kraków’s former Jewish quarter, now a vibrant neighborhood filled with cafes, galleries, and cobbled streets steeped in history.

  • Today offers two meaningful ways to spend your final full day in Poland—each providing a deep connection to the country’s culture, history, and spirit.

    Option One:
Spend the morning visiting the charming village of Zalipie, famous for its tradition of painting homes with vibrant floral designs—a colorful folk art passed down through generations. A local host will introduce us to the village’s history, and stories behind the art. We’ll meet the artists as well! In the afternoon, we’ll return to Kraków for a guided walking tour of Kazimierz, the city’s historic Jewish quarter. Rich in culture and resilience, this district offers layers of history—from its medieval roots to its modern-day revival as a creative and cultural hub.

Option Two (at an additional cost):
For those seeking a more solemn and reflective experience, join a private full-day tour to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll walk through preserved barracks, memorials, and exhibits that tell the harrowing but important story of this site. It is a powerful reminder of the past and a tribute to those who suffered and perished there.

    Evening Gathering:
Regardless of your daytime choice, we will come together in the evening for a special farewell dinner, followed by a visit to a local cemetery for All Saints’ Day. On this national holiday, Polish families honor their loved ones by lighting candles and decorating graves with flowers. The cemeteries glow with thousands of flickering lights, creating a beautiful and moving atmosphere—a fitting and heartfelt close to our journey.

  • If your departure time allows- enjoy a final breakfast together before your transfer to the airport. I hope to see you join me on another adventure. Borneo and Kenya/Tanzania are in the works!
