october 9th Ushguli to the Shkhara Glacier
7:30AM Breakfast but we have to ask them in advance because it’s normally at 8AM
8:00AM Route Breakdown & Milestones (this will take up to 2 hours each way)
Segment 1: Mestia to Ughviri Pass (Concrete & Paved)
The Road: Leaving Mestia, you will follow the primary Zugdidi-Jvari-Mestia-Lasdili highway. This initial stretch climbs steeply up toward the Ughviri Pass (approx. 1,920 meters).
Conditions: The road here is modern, fully paved concrete. However, watch for sudden black ice on the curves if the morning air is freezing on October 9th.
Segment 2: Ipari to Ushguli (The Unpaved Gorge)
The Road: Once you pass the village of Ipari, the smooth asphalt ends. The final 15–20 kilometers transition entirely into an unpaved, gravel mountain track carved into the side of the Enguri Gorge.
Conditions:
This is where your 4WD SUV becomes necessary. You will encounter deep potholes, loose gravel, narrow blind corners, and areas prone to minor rockfalls. Drive slowly, keep your headlights on, and yield to oncoming local transit vans (marshrutkas) or livestock.
Segment 3: Ushguli to Shkhara Glacier Restaurant (The Valley Floor)
The Road: When you reach Ushguli, do not cross the main pedestrian footbridges into the historic village center. Instead, follow the dirt tracks skirting the left bank of the river, heading straight into the flat Enguri valley floor.
Conditions: This final 6–8 kilometers is mostly flat mud and gravel but features a few shallow, active stream crossings. Your high-clearance 4WD will roll right through these, leading you directly to the dead end at the locked Shkhara Glacier Restaurant (Doshdul Cafe). The Dead End: You do not have to worry about missing it or accidentally driving past. The flat gravel road physically narrows, deteriorates into large boulders, and completely ends at this property. There is a wide, flat dirt opening right next to the building where all 4x4s, local horses, and tour vehicles turn around or park
The Remaining Foot Trek: From the cafe area, the vehicle path ends. You will have to hike the remaining 2to 3kilometers (roughly 1to 1.5 hours) to reach the base of Shkhara Glacier. This section climbs sharply over loose, rocky moraine and is strictly impossible for any passenger vehicle.
WE SHOULD NOT HIKE ALL THE WAY TO THE GLACIER! THE SILT TURNS TO QUICKSAND AND WE WOULD NEED SPECIAL GEAR TO DO IT> WE HIKE UNTIL THE VIEW IS INCREDIBLE AND TURN BACK
Dinner at the guesthouse but we have to ask in advance
october 10th Mestia to Tblisi
7:00AM Breakfast and we need to leave early because this will be a very long day in the car. I don’t see a way to avoid it though.
Step 1: Depart Bapsha Guesthouse (Mestia) to Enguri Dam
Time:7:30 AM – 10:15 AM (2 hours, 45 minutes of driving)
Route: Follow the main road south out of Mestia, descending carefully down the paved mountain switchbacks.
Stop 1: Enguri Dam Viewpoint (10:15 AM – 10:30 AM)
Stretch our legs, get some fresh mountain air, and take photos of the turquoise reservoir.
Step 2: Enguri Dam to Martvili Canyon
The Route: Head south past Jvari, then cut east across the lowlands via the Senaki-Chkhorotsqu route toward Martvili.
Stop 2: Martvili Canyon Walk (12:55 PM – 12:50 PM)
Park at the official visitor center visitor center. Head inside to walk the paved, 700-meter loop trail over the limestone canyon bridges to view the waterfalls. This provides an excellent, active leg-stretch. We will need to buy tickets- 40 GEL per person. It is an easy, refreshing 45-minute stroll.
Step 3: Martvili Canyon to Kutaisi (Lunch)
Time:12:50 PM – 1:50 PM (1 hour of driving)
The Route: Drive southeast through Khoni and Tskaltubo straight into the heart of Kutaisi.
Stop 3: Lunch at Georgian Cuisine Magnolia (1:50 PM – 3:05 PM)
Drive to Georgian Cuisine Magnolia on Galaktion Tabidze Street. Pull straight into their free, private guest parking lot. Take a leisurely 1 hour and 15 minutes to enjoy a warm, sit-down lunch over the river.
Step 4: Kutaisi to Tbilisi (The Final Stretch)
Time:3:05 PM – 5:55 PM (2 hours, 50 minutes of driving)
The Route: Leave Kutaisi via Tsereteli Street and merge directly onto the main E60 Highway heading east.
Arrival: We will pass through the highway tunnels, bypass Gori, and enter western Tbilisi, glide down the Right Bank embarkment (Sanapiro), and climb up into Sololaki, arriving right before dusk.
The Zone A Rules: To park your SUV legally on the street here, you must pay for zonal hourly parking. You cannot just buy a standard weekly city pass; you must register your car's license plate on the Tbilisi Parking app or use a local orange/blue street kiosk immediately upon parking. The cost is 1 GEL per hour.
The Underground Secret (Best Option): If you cannot find a street spot right outside No. 20, drive 2 minutes down the hill to the Galleria Tbilisi Shopping Mall Underground Parking Garage at Liberty Square. It is fully covered, monitored by security, has wide spaces for SUVs, and costs roughly 2–3 GEL per hour. It is a highly secure place to dump the car while you unpack and relax.

Chochołów is a historic village in southern Poland famous for its 19th-century wooden architecture, nail-free log cabins, and modern thermal baths. Located near Zakopane in the Podhale region, it serves as a living open-air museum of Goral highlander culture.
Unique Construction: The 1.5-kilometer main street features 127 historic wooden log houses built in the 19th century without a single metal nail, using interlocking joints and wooden pegs.
Washing Tradition: Locals still traditionally wash their dark timber homes with soap and water twice a year before Easter and Christmas to keep the wood bright.
Uprising Heritage: The village is known for the 1846 Chochołów Uprising against the Austrian Empire.
Historic Cottages: Many homes are still inhabited by local families, and some function as small museums, artisan workshops, or craft shops.

3:30PM Walking tour of Jewish section
Kazimierz: The Jewish District
1. Synagoga Tempel
Start along ul. Miodowa; specifically, at Synagoga Tempel. Despite being partially destroyed by the Nazis, this synagogue was reopened and operating right after the war, and as early as 1947 a mikvah was opened inside. Today it is an active synagogue and the heart of the Jewish Culture Festival, hosting meetings, events, and even concerts. Right behind this synagogue you will find the...
2. Jewish Community Center of Krakow
This community center is really a testament to the surviving Jewish community in the city. If you have some extra time in Krakow and are looking to immerse yourself deeper into the Jewish life beyond a simple walking tour, visit the JCC for information on guided tours, Shabbat dinner, genealogical consultations, Jewish culinary workshops, and much, much more. Once you finish at the JCC, continue east along ul. Miodowa until you reach...
3. Synagoga Kupa
This synagogue was founded in 1643 and holds impressive paintings that line the inside of the building depicting Biblical scenes. Its northern wall connects with the remnants of the medieval Kazimierz city wall. Continue along ul. Miodowa and take a right on ul. Szeroka. This old street will take you to a large square: the heart of Jewish Kazimierz. Your first top in the square should be...
4. Synagoga Remuh
This synagogue is the most famous in all of Krakow and one of the oldest, finished in 1557. Thankfully, the building wasn't destroyed during the Holocaust. Behind the synagogue is the oldest Jewish cemetery in all of Krakow and the burial site of famed 16th century Rabbi Yom-Tov Lipmann Heller. Continue down through the square to the 16th century Wolf Popper Synagogue, today which houses the...
5. Ksiegarnia Bookshop
This bookshop is run by Austeria - a publishing house specialising in Judaica. Any topic somewhat related to Judaism, Jewish culture, or Jewish history you will find here. It is well worth a visit for anyone considers books great souvenirs.
6. Stara Synagoga
The next stop is at the end of the square: Stara Synagoga, or the Old Synagogue. It is the oldest synagogue in Krakow, built in the 15th century. During occupation it was used as a warehouse, and a place for execution of Polish hostages. Today it operates as a museum and is well-worth a visit.
Once you finish at the Stara Synagogue, head west along ul. Józefa where you'll see the old Kowea Itim le-Tora Synagogue - today it is used as apartment buildings, but its Stars of David lining the entrance will immediately stand out to you. Along this street is also...
7. Synagoga Wysoka
The High Synagogue is an inactive Orthodox synagogue, given its name for being the tallest synagogue in all of Krakow. It currently houses historical exhibits of the Jewish community.
8. Izaak Synagogue
Heading north on ul. Kupa from ul. Józefa will bring you to the Izaak Synagogue. It was built in 1644 and is named after Isaak the Rich, a Jewish banker at the heart of a fascinating legend. The synagogue currently houses Chabad Lubavitch of Krakow.
By now, you've seen six synagogues, still standing and some still operating, in the span of a few city blocks. Krakow truly has done a fantastic job at preserving its unique Jewish history and fostering the remaining Jewish community. One of the ways in which communities are sustained regardless of where in the world they are is food; and by now, you're probably hungry. You're in luck.
There are plenty of tourist-trap restaurants on ul. Szeroka, regardless of their traditional Jewish cuisine. In my opinion, any restaurant with an English menu perched outside and an overeager waiter asking for your business is not a restaurant you want to bestow with your patronage. However, there are two particular eateries that do deserve your money and they are located right along the Jewish Kazimierz walking tour. Doubling back from Izaak Synagogue and right next door to Synagoga Wysoka is the perfect place to have lunch before you continue on your walking tour:
9. Cheder
This cafe will transport you to the Middle East. Sure, maybe it is more Middle East-inspired than traditional Eastern European Jewish-inspired, but it is a must-visit lunch spot in Kazimierz. At Cheder (a Yiddish word for Jewish school) you can enjoy mint tea, finjan coffee (also known as Turkish coffee to most), and, supposedly, the best hummus in all of Krakow. You'll find Israeli and other Middle Eastern inspired flavors in the selection of drinks and food and the atmosphere - a cozy cafe lined with bookshelves and beaded pillows - is the perfect lunch spot. Once you finish up at Cheder you'll make one more stop on the north side of the river before crossing the bridge:
10. Galicia Jewish Museum
This museum exists to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust while also shedding light on the history of Jews in Poland and across Galicia. It offers new and different perspectives on Jewish history and is a must visit.
Next, cross the river. It is at this point that you are entering what was once the Jewish ghetto of Krakow, and the entrance to the ghetto was...
11. Ghetto Heroes Square
This square is where selections were made within the ghetto, when Nazi officers would decide who seemed fit enough to work in camps; those who were young or elderly or sick were sent to Belzec, an extermination camp. Finally, make your way down ul. Lwowska and find a...
12. Fragment of the Ghetto Wall
The plaque on the wall reads in Polish and Hebrew: "Here they lived, suffered and died at the hands of German torturers. From here they began their final journey to the death camps."
5:30PM 1891 Garni Hotel 4 Podbrzezie, Kraków, 31-054, Poland
